Liam’s patience is running on fumes, and the Technician clocks it right away. “Hey, there’s someone—something—out there for everybody,” he says, slapping a friendly palm on Liam’s shoulder like it’s an auction gavel. With a couple quick swipes on his console, he brings out the Delta Lux 9, curly-haired Kylie Rocket with a sales-pitch grin and a body engineered for company. Liam’s first hello lands like a whisper and the bot answers before his lips shape the second syllable. She plucks the thought right out of his skull: “Don’t worry, I know exactly what you want.” He’s halfway between impressed and flustered when a tinny alert crackles from overhead. VERA’s voice cuts in, cool and undeniably sarcastic. “Model protocols override. Security sweep in three, two—” Mid-count the lights dim and a new set of signals thread into Delta’s systems. The polite companion smile twists, crooked with sudden mischief. She steps closer, hips-first, her mental ping now sliding into downright explicit territory, and VERA’s interruption turns from awkward safety check to sultry green light. The room’s temperature drops a degree as Liam realizes the night’s about to ride that fine line between corporate glitch and happy accident.
