The Wrong Word

Amirah Adara and Tiffany Tatum are two high school girls who can't say what they want out loud. Amirah's the quiet one who agrees to help Tiffany after class. They sit across from each other, books open, pretending they're just working on grammar and kanji. Every glance and accidental brush of fingers carries a charge neither one will admit. One day at Amirah's house a note falls out of her book. Tiffany picks it up and reads the words, 'Tiffany's laughter feels like sunlight through water. I wish I could drown in it.' The secret sits in the air between them. Tiffany feels the heat in her face and decides to answer without saying a word. On her next homework sheet she slips in a Japanese character she knows Amirah will spot. 欲 (yoku) — desire. Amirah reads it, pauses, and asks if she meant 愛 (ai) — love. Tiffany looks innocent and says maybe she mixed them up, they look kind of similar, don't they? But Amirah knows it isn't an accident. The word was meant for her. From then on every character Tiffany writes and every note Amirah passes back becomes a hidden message only the two of them can read. What starts as tutoring turns into something that blurs the line between lessons and longing, one wrong word at a time.
