Women's World: Part Four

Amber's still fussing with her clothes inside that thin nylon tent when she thinks about how stupid this plan is. Every other camper around her has a beard and an axe, zero women in sight, which should make it easy to avoid her usual brand of trouble. She tugs the zipper open and steps into the morning light anyway. Miles away, Leslie's car rolls down the highway. Whatever keeps throwing those strange pictures into her head, she decides it can wait until she gets home to her wife. Over at another house, Morgan walks through the door and Karen's arms slide around her at the same time. Each tries to out-do the other with stories of bizarre run-ins today. The punchlines land at the exact same moment. Neither one laughs. Leslie flicks on the TV. Diane Jones is smiling from the news desk with nothing even remotely helpful behind her, so Leslie turns away. She grabs the picture frame on the side table and the room tilts. Another flash. Sarah and Jenn once traded the thrill of hiding their little something-special from the world. That flavor's gone, though, and they haven't figured out why. Leslie's phone lights up. Sofia's text pops in: *coming home, talk soon*. By the time Sofia walks through the door and meets Leslie's stare, the answers tumble out fast. They make it to the bedroom between kisses, peel each other down, and slide skin against skin until every question melts into the next breathless hour.
